Police Constables, Johnson (left), Law (middle) and Colder (right) were awarded commendations at a recent award ceremony.

On 5 June 2021, PC Mark Johnson, and PC Matt Law responded to a call for assistance from Derbyshire Constabulary, who were dealing with an axe wielding wanted offender, known to be extremely violent upon arrest. The officers recognised how serious the situation was and took control, bringing the incident to a safe and successful conclusion and ensuring that no officers or members of the public were harmed in the process. The offender was detained and later remanded in police custody. Both officers received Assistant Chief Constable Commendations for their bravery and professionalism.

On 20 June 2021, PC Barrie Colder was notified by Derbyshire Constabulary of an incident involving a person who had fallen into the River Derwent and had been struggling for 25 minutes to reach safety. Without hesitation, Barrie and his colleague deployed on foot to the location, running 400 metres whilst in full operational kit. Barrie arrived first at the scene and entered the water, single-handedly pulling the individual up the riverbank where Barrie’s colleague was waiting to provide aftercare. Barrie received a Group Superintendent Commendation for his quick life-saving actions, which stopped the person from drowning.

Senior Police Officer, Inspector Cossey said:

“These officers are real-life super-heroes who deserve to be recognised for their brave and heroic actions. Their quick thinking and professionalism prevented serious harm to others and helped save lives. They are a credit to the Force.”
